Postural Alignment: Boost Energy and Health

The Hips.

They are a core part of our posture and support the spine, as well as being lifted by the legs.  Here is where our journey begins.

Hips can become misaligned due to a fall, being overworked with running or climbing stairs, or just twist in response to the myriad of muscles surrounding them.  The sacrum is the fulcrum of the hips, much like the Keystone of an arch holds the weight of all the stones that make up the archway.  From a Naprapathic standpoint it is the key to realignment and better health of the legs, but this is just the beginning.

What started the cascade of events that led to pelvic rotation?

We think of two types of pelvic rotations: Posterior or Classic Pelvic Rotation, and Anterior Pelvic Rotation.  Get out your protractor!  In Myofascial Release we can see these relationships when we go to the side of the person and look straight at the trochanter; the side protuberance of the bone of the leg that is on the side of the hip. Using that as the horizontal axis we are going to use our pointers and place one fingertip on the inferior border of Anterior Iliac Spine (ASIS) and the other on the Posterior Iliac Spine (PSIS).  Aim your fingers toward each other and you will have an angle in relation to the horizontal axis.  Measure the angle in degrees:

Women: Typically should have no more than a 10 – 15 degree angle,

Men:  Typically should have around a 5 degree angle.

Anything outside those ranges is abnormal.  If the angle has increased, indicating a pelvic tilt that is anterior, we will have lumbar compression and the muscles associated with that stress.  If the angle is decreased, indicating a pelvic tilt that is posterior, we will have sacral shear and the muscles pulling the pelvis in a posterior fashion along with loss of a lumbar curve. These landmarks are easily seen from the side view.

Along with supporting the spine, the pelvis has many ligaments and muscles attached in order to help us move our legs, sit down, turn to look to the side, and control most of our body movements.  We use the term “syndrome” in most of our diagnostic evaluations because so much is going on here; and we use orthopedic tests to tell us more about that.

Deerfield Motion Reflex is the most important orthopedic test in our diagnostic tool bag.  Dr. Deerfield discovered a surprising and accurate relationship between the lower legs and knee flexion and the corresponding tensions of the pelvis and lumbar spine; in fact that tension can also be felt all the way up into the neck.

Here is just an overview of what Deerfield Motion Reflex orthopedic test tells us:  Have the patient lie on their stomach with arms relaxed and face looking nose down into the face cradle.  Standing at the end of the table, preferably a low chiropractic exam table if possible, look down at the heels and flex the feet slightly.  Compare the heels or malleolus, and determine which one is superior.  Make a mental note and flex the knees.  Which event happens: does the superior malleolus stay inferior when flexed, or does it go long?  If the superior malleolus stays inferior with knee flexion we have now witnessed what Deerfield calls a Posterior Pelvic Rotation.  The muscles of the thigh have contracted and the leg on the side of posteriority is shorter in contrast to the other leg. More on that in a moment.  If, however, the malleolus was superior in the straight leg, but goes long or the leg appears to grow longer with knee flexion, this would indicate the tension is in the lumbar spine.

Posterior Pelvic Rotation.

The findings for a Classical Pelvic Rotation are easy to predict: When the bone of the pelvis, just one side you understand, goes into a posterior tilt it causes the muscles of the hamstring to become tight and shorten, and the anterior muscles such as the rectus femoris to become weak and lengthened.  The sacrum gets literally pulled toward the posterior pelvis and the opposite side PSIS ligaments are pulled causing the pain fibers to fire.  A patient will say, “I feel pain here,” as they point to one side PSIS.  When they are standing, that posterior side will be visible with the Ilium higher on that side.  That can be explained in multiple scenarios related to the rotation and the pull on the ligaments from the ilium that attach to the lumbar spine.  Either the lumbar vertebraes will be pulled toward the posterior ilium in response as the ligaments shorten, or the lumbar vertebraes will be rotated toward the opposite side as the psoas pulls on the vertebraes on the side of posteriority causing the vertebral rotation.  Either way we have to treat the entire syndrome as it appears: treat according to findings.

Anterior Pelvic Tilt.

The other side of the ilium is going to tilt in an anterior rotation because it has to; no choice.  It will never not rotate.  Remember that everything in the body is connected in one way or another; nature has designed everything in the body to communicate this way.  Amazing, I know, but we also need to educate ourselves in order to know what to do in order to resolve the problem.  It is a problem: patients will complain about hip pain, low back pain, lower abdominal pulling, weakness of legs, digestive disorders, or neck pain, knee pain, ankle pain, and so on.  Where is it all coming from, and what do we treat first?  Treat according to findings and START at the Pelvis which is our center of gravity.

Begin with creating a strong foundation for the spine; treat the anterior pelvic rotation first, then move to the posterior side, and after that the lumbar spine will follow: IN THAT ORDER.  Why? It works, that’s why.  No kidding.  If you treat the OUTCOME of pelvic rotation — the posteriority — without first treating the cause — the anteriority — you will just have to repeat your steps.  I for one am all in favor of treatments that are concise and easy on the body.  Believe me your patient will thank you, and say things like, “that feels good.”  Not, “ouch, that hurts!”

Just a word of advice here: you will have to have them come back for treatments at least weekly if you want this problem to resolve.  The ligaments that attach everywhere around this huge complex do not receive much oxygen because they are not vascularized; no blood vessels here so no oxygen.  They need encouragement and repeated stretching, but it must stay below the plastic range so they don’t get damaged and it takes time for the body to respond to stretching.  Anyone who stretches with their workouts will have first hand experience about how difficult it can be to stretch and how long it takes to get results.  Please tell me you stretch with your workouts!  If not, ask me how.

Naprapathic treatments are just that; stretching routines.  We lengthen tissues, apply techniques to massage away tension and trigger points, and use various means to relieve pain and regain alignment.  They are very very very gentle and if they do cause pain, we stop!  I get a lot of myofascial release into the tissues long before I ever do any stretching, especially in the cervical area.  But when I finally do go to the spine and do adjustments, they are going to hold longer and there should not be any pain or discomfort; I want to hear, “Doc, I feel so much better!  Look at how far I can turn my head now!”  Makes my day.

Postural Alignment

I conduct a visual inspection of the patient before they lie down on a table.  I look at them from the front, the sides and from the back.  Topographical cues tell me what is going on and I explain what I am seeing to the patient, sometimes mimicking their posture so they see what I am seeing.  Rather comical if you ask me, and a little laughter never hurt, especially when you are worried because you have been in pain and your legs are numb!

I look for horizontal lines that tell me about the spine.  Shoulders should be in a straight line and natural curves of the spine should be there also.  Too far in one way or another, whether tilting or leaning, or too much curvature tells me a lot about what is pulling on the spine.

Next I have them lie face down.  Gravity is now removed from the equation and I can get a better picture about how the body is holding itself together.  Some of the distortions that are seen standing will be absent when gravity is no longer a factor.

I know Oakley Smith would not like me now, but I am going to work on the superficial tissue first.  Dr. Smith created the science of Naprapathy and he thought we needed to do our initial evaluations without interfering with the superficial structures.  I do not agree; these are after all superficial findings and do not in any way give us a true picture of underlying causation.  I get it out of the way, and I used to be chastised in clinic because I spent too much time on each patient.  Guess what? I did it anyway.  I know more than most people coming in to this profession and myofascial release is good for everyone, including infants.  The problem is not resolved, but I can certainly see it more clearly now.

I use my orthopedic test to determine where I will begin the treatment: pelvis or lumbar spine.  Then I treat above the pelvis at the waistline, below the pelvis with the knees and ankles, and finally the cervical spine.

Following these simple steps in order will insure a lasting result, and patients will heal.  As long as they don’t fall on the ice or constantly overwork their muscles everything going on will resolve.  Pain goes away, muscles become strong, brain fog disappears and patients can return to their work schedule, their workout, and enjoy their lives.

Follow-up care is very important.  I cannot stress enough how getting evaluated on a regular basis can insure the health of the spine and entire body and brain.  Once a month is awesome, but that may happen after a few months of regular weekly treatments.  Here is my protocol.

Initial visit to evaluate the spine and begin proper care.

Weekly visits until symptoms resolve and the patient is comfortable in their own skin, as it were.

Bi-weekly visits continue until the pelvic rotation is resolved and the tissues “stay” in alignment.

Then the patient graduates to monthly treatments.  Missing a month every so often is going to be okay, as long as it does not extend beyond eight weeks.

Point in case: a patient was coming to me weekly, fell on the ice, or sneezed the wrong way and threw her back out; the lumbar spine was insulted by the extreme trauma.  After just two treatments the problem was resolved and we were back to weekly treatments.  She followed with regular care for about 6 more months and was released.

Another patient was coming in twice a month, but experienced an automobile accident.  I encouraged her to come in just hours after the accident and began with a very gentle treatment working on the muscles mostly and very gentle stretching of the neck.  Just two weeks and she had no residual symptoms and certainly no whip lash injury; we had avoided the possible build up of lactic acid by relaxing the pain fibers and keeping the blood supply to the area that was traumatized by the impact.  See how this works?

In yoga class I can look at someone and give them verbal cues to help lengthen the psoas, prescribe yoga postures that will help lengthen the posterior muscles of the spine and relaxation that will gently stretch ligaments.  I’m just awesome like that.  You should come to one of my yoga classes!

In massage school they erroneously tell massage therapists not to treat anyone immediately after an auto accident or a serious fall.  WRONG!  That is the most crucial time to go in there and calm everything down.  Avoid any surgeries or broken bones, but everything else needs touch!

Okay, I am off my soap box and encourage you to see spines differently.  If you see someone who is hunched over, twisting in a weird way, or complaining about their knee pain they probably have a posterior pelvic rotation and need to see a bodywork professional.  Tell them to see a Naprapath, and if one is not near them, seek help from a Myofascial Therapist.  They will thank you.

Many years ago when lifting weights I ran across an article by Larry Scott.

Mr. Scott was a personal trainer and mentor to Arnold Schwarzenegger who trained with Scott when he first arrived in the US.

In fact, Larry Scott has won Mr. America, Mr. Olympia (1965) and Mr. USA titles. He had such a marvelous physique.  In the article in the Chicago Runner, he described a workout routine unlike any I had ever experienced.  I used his technique and found amazing results.  Later he came out with another routine, which he called the “9-Minute Miracle Workout.”1 What is amazing to me is that less time spent working out can give better benefits.

After receiving my doctorates in naprapathy, I was better able to include movement therapies in the rehabilitation protocol with patients after an accident or illness or if they just wanted to improve their health.  It was then that I began to really incorporate the ideas that Larry Scott, and our good friend Dr. Fenn2, in what I now call FennFlexR.  I gathered together yoga flexibility, breathing techniques, synapse technique and higher intensity levels into a weight lifting routine to create FennFlexR.  Here is the basic premise:  The muscle works harder because we focus on eccentric contraction and the repetitions are slow using focused breathing and multiple breaths throughout the range of motion.  We can reduce injuries, as well as delayed onset muscle soreness, and increase strength in less time as well as become more flexible.

How Growth Hormone Increases with Intensity Training

The anterior pituitary is a gland located in the cranium between the two hemispheres of the brain just behind the orbits of the eyes.  Growth Hormone is secreted by the anterior pituitary and stimulates the liver and other body cells to secrete a growth-promoting peptide hormone known as IGF-1, insulin-like growth factor-1 also known as somatomedin C.

In addition, IGF-1 exerts direct effect on the metabolism of protein, carbohydrate and lipid on various cells and tissue.

The primary physiological effect of growth hormone (GH) is to stimulate both growth and protein anabolism.  Compared to these effects, metabolism of carbohydrates (CHO)and lipid are minor.  However, marked excess of GH does produce significant increase in CHO and lipid metabolism.

Growth Hormone will

  • render adipocytes more responsive to lipolytic stimuli;
  • increase gluconeogenesis by the liver; and
  • reduces the ability of insulin to cause glucose uptake by peripheral tissues, often termed “anti-insulin” effect, as seen with elevated plasma glucose levels.

During most of the day, little or no GH is secreted, although bursts may be elicited by certain stimuli, including stress, hypoglycemia, and exercise.  An hour or two after one falls asleep, one or more larger prolonged bursts of secretion may occur.  These are under the control of the hypothalamus or specifically, the hypothalamic hypophysiotropic hormones.  Growth hormone is stimulated by GHRH, growth hormone releasing hormone. And inhibited by hypothalamic somatostatin.

The result of changes of these two signals is the occurrence of episodic bursts and manifests a striking diurnal rhythm.

Additionally, during periods of stress, the fight-or-flight response is activated in the autonomic nervous system.  Including epinephrine, which is secreted from the adrenal medulla, the actions of the sympathetic neurons under stress include the following:

  • increased hepatic (liver) and muscle glycognolysis (provides a quick source of glucose)
  • increased breakdown of adipose tissue triglycerides (provides a supply of glycerol for gluconeogenesis and of fatty acids for oxidation.
  • Decreased fatigue of skeletal muscle
  • Increased cardiac output (increased cardiac contractility and heart rate)
  • Shunting of blood from viscera to skeletal muscles
  • Increased ventilation
  • Increased coagulation of blood

 

The advantages of these responses is invaluable

Steroid hormones, in contrast, are produced by the adrenal cortex, testes, and ovaries.

  • Aldosterone effects salt metabolism and the kidney’s ability to handle sodium, potassium and hydrogen ions.
  • Cortisol and corticosterone are glucocorticoids and effect the metabolism of glucose and organic nutrients. Cortisol also facilitates the body’s response to stress and regulates the immune system.
  • Androgens are secreted by the testes and ovaries.

Steroid hormones exist in plasma bound to proteins and free dissolved in the plasma.  The degree of protein binding affects the rate of metabolism and the excretion of the hormone.

Hormones that circulate freely in the bloodstream last only brief periods and protein-bound hormones are less vulnerable to excretion or metabolism and removal may take many hours or several days.  The effect of steroid hormones is the rate of synthesis of proteins.  Pharmacologic benefits include the suppression of allergic and inflammatory responses.

In an exercise routine where subjects goals are to tone and sculp, the GH can be elicited with several positive effects:

The method is to create a stress situation with intensity of weight that causes a surge of GH to be excreted.  Because GH has a local response, this is especially helpful in spot reducing.

FennFlexR

The FennFlexR is a routine that is done with every muscle in four sets.  Each set has a purpose:

Set One.  Warm the muscle.

Set Two.  Work the muscle.

Set Three.  The “Fear” set.

Set Four.  Work the growth hormone into the target muscle.

Between sets one and two, and two and three the person must stretch the muscle they just worked.  It is possible to increase weights on a weekly basis using this technique.

Set One.

I call this set the warm-up set.  This allows blood to flow into the muscle to warm the tissues and joints.  I recommend that the weights are kept at a low range to allow for easy range of motion for the joint and muscle effort should be low.  The brain should recognize this as an easy effort and the body remains relaxed.

Stretching is very important after set one.  While the muscle is warm, the muscle can be stretched and not torn.  There is no catabolism in the FennFlexR technique.

Set Two.

This is the strength set.  Enough weight is placed on the machine or bar so that the person is able to accomplish 6-8 good clean reps.  No more.  There is a reason for this.  Each repetition is done slowly and deliberately with good extension and smooth flexion to control the movement at the joint and focus on eccentric contraction of muscles.  An example is the biceps curl.  Each repetition is done slowly as the elbow extends and eccentrically lengthens controlling the weight held in the hand.  This will gradually change the lever arm as well allowing for control at the joint and strengthen the length of the muscle.  Breath is most important here.  In FennFlexR we take several short breaths and exhale several times to allow lactic acid to be processed more quickly as we slowly lower the arm and raise the arm.  The goal is to complete six good repetitions staying within an aerobic capacity.  When we go beyond the level at which our mitochondria can process lactic we have entered into the anaerobic phase of exercise, which is catabolic and we begin to break down muscle tissue.  We absolutely do not want to do this.  There is no muscle soreness after working out if we stay in the aerobic capacity.

Stretching here will allow the muscles to relax, prevent reflexogenic contraction and guarding in a very tired muscle.  Relax and take your time.  I recommend stretching each muscle for 2 or 3 minutes.  This will also allow the heart rate to come down and a minimal amount of cooling to occur.

Set Three.

The muscle is now ready to work harder than it ever has.  Larry Scott called this the ‘Fear’ set.  The reason makes sense, however.  The person must lift so much weight, isometrically, that only one quarter of one rep can be accomplished.  If you are on equipment that counts your sets and reps for you, then make that one complete repetition.  The isometric workout here focuses on one muscle lifting one bone.  First of all, the brain is extremely excited and a rush of growth hormone is released into the body and targeted to the muscle that is working so much overtime.  Secondly, the bone is being pulled upon which makes for stronger bone and tendon.  And thirdly, the heart rate is up which is pumping more oxygen into the muscle and more lactic acid into the mitochondria.  Also, over time there will eventually be more mitochondria to help out in the future.

There is no stretching session between set three and SetFour for one very important reason.  Growth hormone will be absorbed and eradicated just as quickly as it was released, so it must be used immediately.

Set Four.

Without a break between set three and SetFour, except for changing weights, the person will now reduce the weight to the level of Step One.  This lower amount of weight following an isometric stress on the muscle will help focus the growth hormone into the target muscle and help build more muscle fibers.  We do not need to worry about repair, because we have stayed in an anabolic mode throughout our workout.

Increasing Weights

If during Set Two you find that you can almost as easily do eight repetitions as doing six, it is time to increase weights.  But this is not the set where we increase the weights.  Increasing weights on Set Two will only damage the muscle and that is not our goal.  Instead, increase the weights on Set Four.  After an isometric contraction, the growth hormone is focused into the muscle.  By increasing the weights only 5 to 10 pounds in Set Four, the muscle begins to recognize this as an easy task to accomplish and remembers the new weight limit.  At the next workout, this is the weight you would begin with.  It is safe to increase weights every other workout for that muscle.

Variety

The muscles need to rest, and the brain likes variety.  It is better to let a muscle that has worked very hard rest for two weeks before working it again.  For this reason, we do not do the same workout routine every day.  The brain would get bored and you would reach a plateau.  Instead, vary the workouts in this way:  Work the front of the upper body one day and the back of the lower body on the same day.  Then on a following day work the upper body in the back and the lower body in the front.  Or spread it out even more and work front of the arms and upper back, upper chest and hams, calves and biceps, latisimus and tibialis, etc.  Variety is the spice of life, and it is important that the brain stay amused and excited.  Besides the added benefit of allowing the muscle to build more fibers especially when recovering from injury, it is important to vary your workouts.  Always add abdominal work with every workout, and a good 10-minute aerobic warm-up before beginning any workout.

Here is a summary of the benefits of FennFlexR:

  1. No delayed onset muscle soreness
  2. Growth Hormone Release for muscle building
  3. No muscle damage
  4. Decreased rehabilitation time
  5. Increased strength in shorter time.
  6. Increased bone mass and density
  7. More oxygen to the brain

RELAXATION

Relaxation is necessary for optimal performance during the day. At the beginning and end of your workout sit in a cross legged posture or Easy Pose.  Empty your mind and relax the tension from your body.  Breathing is key to relaxation.  Inhale completely and deeply, relax and exhale quietly.   Practice Three-Part Breathing for a few breaths, then continue to breathe deeply for five to ten minutes.

Three-Part Breathing

Part One.  Inhale deeply allowing the belly to move forward.  The diaphragm contracts as the lungs expand filling with fresh Oxygen.  Fill the body as water fills a vessel.

Part Two.  Begin with the belly and expand the lower ribs, then the upper ribs all the way to the clavicles.

Part Three.  Feel the air reaching the top of the chest, then relax.

Control the exhale and quietly empty the top of the chest, the lower chest and ribs, and then the belly comes back.  Gently pull the navel back towards the spine.  The inhale will follow naturally as you repeat the process.

I listen while patients tell their story.  The first medicine that I give them, no matter what the signs or symptoms, is encouragement.  I encourage them to have trust in that their body will heal itself. Our bodies have the ability to heal, and our treatment is to help reconnect the patient and their inward capabilities; thought, imagination, emotional response, and gratitude.

This is the credo of the Spring Creek Holistic Center and the personal credo for everyone.   Words are powerful and handy helpers in the healing process.  Words of encouragement allow the true inner strength to reveal itself and the Tiger emerges.  Strong and yet sentient, the Tiger is sensitive to its surroundings and can sense the emotion of creatures nearby by their scent; chemoreceptors in the brain trigger hormonal responses when stimulated by certain scents.

 

The feeling that accompanies the hormonal response will either help the Tiger survive, or propagate to support the species.  Human beings are not sure what to do with their hormonal responses when the need to do either no longer exists.

 

Keeping healthy requires daily discipline to eat regular healthy meals and healthy snacks and get acquainted to the needs of their body.  Body aches and pains are nature’s way of communicating to us that something may be wrong.  The body begins to communicate to various parts to maintain a homeostatic internal environment.  Chemical messengers carry signals and we feel something with our muscles and skin, and even in the joints.

 

We eventually regain control and balance is restored within us, or so it would seem on the outside.  Homeostasis is not a static event but a series of checks and balances that employ when certain chemicals are too high or too low, our temperature is too high or too low, or we are too cold, or too hot.  Living at either extreme is uncomfortable, so we find a middle ground that is comfortable.  That develops our thermostat and the body has a job to do that will last the rest of its life.  Until we get sick and it gets out of balance again, and the cycle begins.

 

Originally our bodies were made healthy and whole.  Sometimes we are born with nutritional deficiencies or they may have developed later but in either case, the treatment begins the same way; with encouragement.

 

The TIGER approach to health is holistically based and supported by years of personal experience.  It speaks to the person without regard to religious affiliation or spiritual gender.  We as human beings are capable of thought, imagination, gratitude and emotional response.  It supports the homeopathic viewpoint that healing comes not only from the head down, but also “the inside out.”

 

The idea appears as a thought, and our imagination begins to go to work.  We can better appreciate where we are, and remember the good that exists in our lives creating a sense of gratitude; grateful for knowing that your body can heal, and that emotions can be part of the healing process.  Our emotional response to our environment is a big clue of our immune and health status.

Plants really do make us feel better

When we bought our mini-farm in 2010 I found a great place to learn about plants through the Chicago Botanic Garden.  The Master Gardener Program is offered through the University of Illinois Extension Office, and each county has its own division.  I attended a once a week seminar from January until March in 2011 and volunteered my 60 hours time at the Chicago Botanic Gardens between Evening Island and the Green Youth Farm. I felt that the terrain of the Evening Island was very similar to our land; water features, grasses, fields, shrubs and bulbs.  The CBG rents land in several places and hire inner city children to work four hours a day at minimum wage to teach them organic gardening, how to harvest the vegetables, and sell them, and also how to prepare yummy meals.

During an annual conference, CBG brought in many speakers to tell us about some of the recent projects around how plants influence our lives.  In an apartment complex in Chicago, for instance, more people would gather around the trees growing on the grounds. Children who lived just a couple of miles from Lake Michigan had never even been to the lake. Even photographs or prints with scenes of nature have a profound affect on office buildings, especially where there is no view to the outside world as in a basement or completely bricked siding. In Britain a study of children who spent time in nature saw increased math and reading skills.  Besides calming our mood when we are stressed, breathing oxygen rich air that plants provide can have many benefits to our health and sense of well being.

Bach Flower Remedies were created while Dr. Bach noticed how the mood of patients changed when they were exposed to the floral fragrance molecules in a garden setting.  Peppermint Essential Oil was used in scientific research for its ability to improve athletic performance and found to be very effective.  A 2014 study that was reported in the Journal of Phytomedicine, and in 2013 in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Medicine both stated the benefits of ingesting just a few drops of Peppermint oil in water before exercise enhances the athletic performance by increasing oxygen flow as the components in peppermint oil relax the smoothe muscles of the body.  What is more is it also reduces lactate levels, which contributes to soreness after exercise.

Basil plants emit a wonderful aroma that repels mosquitos; they don’t like it one bit.  The essential oil of the Basil plant benefits humans, however, including anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and high in anti-oxidants.  Basil is the King of plants. Most savory herbs like Basil, Thyme, Oregano, black pepper and Clove, to name just a few smell wonderful when we use them in cooking, and add delicious flavors to our food.  They are the primary medicinal herbs that many cultures use for health benefits like Basil. As a long time herbalist, I would rather use a natural herb or essential oil to get my vitamins and healthy nutritional intake compared to supplementing with pills.

Growing herbs at home can be very satisfying and picking your own fresh herbs for the kitchen is the best way to add flavor to your home cooked meals.  Check out the publication from the U.S. Department of Agriculture on “Savory Herbs: Culture and Use.”  A new concept among Master Gardeners is the Edible Garden.  Grow flowers along with savory herb plants, and vegetables and within this “companion” garden comes many benefits.  Herbs ward off certain insects and disease and deter predators that might otherwise invade your vegetable garden.  Plus the aromas when you walk through your garden will add to the beauty and charm of your experience.  I have Idaho Blue Tansy growing near my wooden bench swing, along with other flowers and trees.  It is a beautiful cluster of yellow flowers that sends a relaxing aroma into the air when I am out at my swing relaxing with my favorite book and repels mosquitos, too!

Idaho Blue Tansy stands very tall with yellow flower clusters on top. Very fragrant and the essential oil has a blue color; hence the name.

While we distill Tansy and make a beautiful essential oil from the plant, we can benefit from its light fragrance in the garden by just crushing some leaves between the fingers and applying it on the skin.  Have you ever taken the Rosemary leaves and crushed them to enjoy their fragrance?  I love when restaurants plant a barrel full of savory herbs out front for their visitors to enjoy!  A little rosemary, some basil, perhaps a thyme or parsley!  Wow, my word is complete!

I also think growing the flowers and herbs in a vertical garden right outside your back door is the absolute best way to let nature help improve our mental and physical well being.  There are lots of designs, some made of wood and others made from cinder blocks, that are inexpensive and easy to make.  I have a wooden one that I fastened to the wall on the back of my home.  There are no windows there and I even added a water collector to the design.  The planters can be removed and replaced each year with varieties that you either plant every year, or bring in to the green house and keep enjoying during winter.  My basil is a prime example; I love love love pesto.  I make up a batch and put it in ice cube trays with a silicone bottom and freeze.  Pop them out and place into a freezer bag and add a few to dishes for the wonderful basil flavor that is very fresh and delicious.

Water is an important feature to the outside garden that helps add a unique quality of adding oxygen and negative ions from a bubbler into the air for improved mental health and relaxation.  When water explodes over the surface and on rocks it releases particles we call negative ions.  These help lift our mood because we inhale them easily.  Plants natural emit negative ions especially on a warm sunny day through their process of phytosynthesis; take a walk in nature and along babbling brooks or create your own water feature in your garden to enjoy the benefits of negative ion therapy.

Being close to nature also keeps us grounded. What does this mean for our health? Being grounded means we are not “flighty” and we stick close to the moment in our experience with life and living. I use a grounding technique, Grounding essential oil, and I enjoy fresh air daily to help me stay grounded.

Touching the earth is the absolute best way to get grounded.  Negatively charged particles that are emitted from the ground are in essence blending and neutralizing the excess particles floating around in our body, those pesky free radicals, and bringing our body back into balance in our internal electrical field. Touching the earth means to go barefoot occasionally on either ground, or very old concrete and maybe asphalt, but especially a beautiful yard of green grass.  What is even more impressive is these free electrons that boost our health are, well, free!

Mind Body Medicine

From a very early age I saw evidence that the body reacted to the emotions and our thoughts could dictate our state of health, or disease.  I saw it first hand with my mother who had a mental illness that went misdiagnosed for decades.  I lived in a dysfunctional household where she would be fine and smiling one day, and the next day she would be a terror.  I did NOT want to live in that family with that household, but I knew there was absolutely no way to leave there; I was eight years old.

So when Deepak explains the science that has developed around Mind Body Medicine and how our bodies react to our thoughts and experiences I am in total agreement.  Here is what so called Western Medicine has decided to ignore; that our body reacts in a chemical way to our surroundings.  We understand very little really about what to do with this fact.

Trauma is an extreme example, and one that I would like to address because I think it is an experience that we have all been faced with at one time or another.  I understand how the pain nerve fibers react from an automobile accident even when there are no broken bones, torn skin or loss of limb.  But why do the pain fibers continue to fire when we seem to be fully recovered?  And what about the trauma of someone who angers you or scares you? How does our body process these emotional upsets that in turn signal chemical changes in our bodies?  I want to know how we can deal with all types of trauma, and I want to know in what ways can we get back to normal?

I think touch is the answer.  As a health practitioner and bodyworker I see patients who are in pain from no particular incident other than they “moved the wrong way” and now they are in pain.  I also see patients who went the normal route of medication for pain and muscle tension, a practice that is far too prevalent in the emergency room, and went to physical therapy and were told they would never be their old self again.  I treated that same patient with tender care, evaluating where the tension was affecting their body, the musculoskeletal system, and more importantly their emotions.  How is it that after a year of the “standard of care” they made no recovery, but with my skilled hands and gentle heart, they were able to return to their “pre-accident” state within six weeks?

When we think of Mind Body Medicine, there is another component that is not ever discussed; the healing quality of touch from another.  In the book, Psychology of Yoga, they discuss how simple touch can have many physiological benefits as well as emotional benefits.  A young woman with seizures that are not well controlled with medication saw dramatic results in just a few weeks of gentle massage. I saw a young child who having been born addicted to heroine was finally able to relax spastic muscles after just a few minutes of CranioSacral Still Point.

If we are to speak of Mind Body Medicine, then we should also include in this discussion the idea that energy is also shared between people especially if the intent is to share compassion and love for another human being.  I think there is agreement among providers that trauma victims lose sight of their self.  Being able to reconnect to their true self is difficult, but when we experience the touch of another compassionate soul there can be a shift.  Healing Touch has been taught to nurses and other bodyworkers as a non-invasive modality to help bring energy back to the body, mind and spirit of anyone willing to receive.

Trauma-sensitive yoga therapy is very aware of the disconnection between the body and the mind and uses yoga postures to guide the individual back into the awareness state of the body; to speak to the Inner Physician that Dr. Upledger identifies when working with the body. The dialogue between the tissues and the subconscious mind happens between the individual and their inner self to reconnect their body and their mind in a more healthy relationship.

Being consciously aware of our body is the first step to enlightenment.  How many of us are aware? Our jobs seem to be so much more important than our bodies and we neglect the basic needs like drinking water, exercise or relaxation. That is how our American society is expected to act; do your job and your day is about getting the work done and who cares about what your body needs.  A difficult dance, I admit, but it is a sad state of affair.  I once was fired from a job because the owner caught me reading a book on Grieving that I used to keep me calm after my mother died.  He did not ask me what I was reading or what it was for, just that I was taking time at my desk to read something not work related.  That was really dumb and stupid on his part and I was happy to leave.  I never went back to another “job” after that and have remained self-employed; thank God.

My own idea about trauma goes deeper than most.  I have experienced many life-altering traumatic experiences; drowning, automobile crash, loss of loved one, emotional trauma, and even disease which can also be traumatic. I think we have forgotten or may not even be aware of how connected our thoughts are to our body and how powerful they can be if we use them as the vehicle to change the chemical process that our body undergoes; change your thought and change your life. Not really hard to understand for some, but very foreign to many.

In What a Plant Knows: A Field Guide to the Senses, Daniel Chamovitz talks about the chemical messengers in plants that help it thrive and survive.  Even messengers that are spread from plant to plant through space, they emit chemicals that warn other plants of predators making them less appealing.  We all know how wonderful a green salad can be, but did you also know that the anti-oxidant properties are enhanced when you tear the lettuce?  This is the plant’s automatic healing process; to emit chemicals to begin the wound repair and thanks to them we can eat the anti-oxidants they produce to help our own bodies heal.

When I first got into Mind Body Medicine as a massage therapist and nutritionist, I used hair analysis.  I could not work with a lab back then, and the hair is really accurate in showing how our bodies are using the food we eat or reacting to the drugs we take.  Hair has become a gold standard in determining if someone is a drug user; it is registered and stored in the hair shaft and stays there until you cut it off.  We used the first inch from the scalp as a sample for the lab to test.  The lab I worked with would send me back a report on the metabolic markers so that I could then determine what imbalances in their diet needed to be corrected.  It was the only lab that would also tell me their metabolic type: slow, mixed, or fast.  I think this is similar to the Dosha type in Ayurvedic Medicine: Vata, Pita, or Kapha.  Our goal in either case is always to locate the cause of the imbalance, treat it temporarily to reduce symptoms, but inevitably to find the missing link, remove the underlying cause, and regain our health.

Chronic Infection and Inflammation

Hello and Happy New Year for 2016 from Doc Wah!

Most of my friends don’t really know me.  I am a woman with many talents and lots of complications in my life.  I live two hours from the clinic that I work in one day a week.  My income was decreased by two thirds when we bought this small plot of land and most days I am in construction mode.  I would love to play guitar and sing songs, paint and create crafts, and garden, but most days I have work to do on the house and there is absolutely no time for what I want to do that really makes me happy.  I feel some days that I am not being creative and it makes me crazy!

My friends also do not know that I struggle on a daily basis with chronic inflammation that came upon me several, make that many years ago.  I think it may have been when I had a raw fish salad back in 1994, but I was sick a few years before that.  I would wake up with a fever and congestion, take a long brisk walk after dropping my daughter off for vocal lessons, and I would feel better.  Exercise increases DHEA production from the adrenal glands and reduces inflammation.  I did not know that back then, but I knew I felt better, and I love to walk.

I moved to Chicago to the suburbs and after a long walk/run had a muscle spasm that developed into a trigger point that was relentless.  I could not even walk, and definitely no running.  The weight increased and very rapidly; I gained 30 pounds that year.

I enrolled in college to earn my doctorate, but I went to a gym and the water was contaminated; I got the worst ear infection of my life.  I have never been in that much pain.  Thank goodness the ENT doctor (Eye, Ear Nose, Throat) gave me a natural remedy; 1/2 apple cider vinegar (that balances pH) and 1/2 rubbing alcohol (that evaporates the ACV).  Then I follow with garlic oil.

When I got married in 1969 I was a virgin.  Unfortunately, my husband was not.  He was when we met, but he had an affair when he went away for part of a year for his military stint.  He gave me Candida.  I was so sick!  I gained weight, was a total bitch, and had reoccurring vaginal infections; for years.  After 20 years, and three failed relationships, two ending in divorce, I discovered that I had Candida infection.  I took myself off all sugar for two years; not even fruit.  I lost 20 pounds.  Then I took myself off gluten, and lost another 20 pounds!  I did not know I had that much weight on me, but I did!  Man, I felt myself again for the first time since high school!  How can someone survive such a horrific infection for 20 years, and still manage to have four healthy children and still function in life?  Sometimes I amaze even myself!

I tested myself when I was in college for my doctorate because the tests were reduced for students.  The stool analysis showed that I had zero acidophilus in my colon. And I had a strep infection.  But when I called the Infectious Disease Control department at a local hospital they laughed at me!  They said that that type of strep only infected neonatal; new babies!  No way could I have this infection.  Seriously?  And of course, I did not go see a doctor because I thought they would laugh at me, too.  So I struggled and kept trying natural remedies for many more years than I care to recount.

Then I discovered the Raw Living Lifestyle.  A miracle happened!  I expelled a worm that was about 10 inches long.  I have photos.  The digestive tract of this opaque worm was green.  I had been taking a shot of wheat grass three times a day for several days when I started the Raw Fast, and using a catheter for my water enemas.  He did NOT like the wheat grass, but I must have dislodged him with the catheter from my descending colon.  I felt much better and lost an amazing 35 pounds!  That lasted for a couple of years.

Every time I would feel cloudy, sluggish and weak, I would do the raw detox again and feel better.  It doesn’t work that way anymore.  More stuff is going on and I don’t know what.

My mother tried to commit suicide not once, but twice.  Once she took sleeping pills and a large glass of vodka.  They pumped her stomach and put her in a psych ward for 6 weeks.  She quit smoking but when she got out, Dad got her started again.  Dumb. The next time she tried to slit her wrists.  She did it the wrong way and just bleed a lot, but once again she was committed.  This time she did not start smoking again, but the damage was done.  Turned out she had a chronic infection in her lungs; her doctor called it Walking Pneumonia.  Enough to make her tired, listless and feel hopeless and resulted in the suicide attempt.  I am afraid that if I cannot get rid of this chronic infection I may try to “off” myself; I know I have had suicidal thoughts in the past. Like the time my daughter yelled at me for no apparent reason; I just wanted to throw myself in front of the next semi that drove down my street.  Whoa, put the brakes on! Nobody, not even my daughter, is worth losing my life over!  What an idiot!

I had a major major car wreck a long time ago. I had a head laceration and my whole spine was screwed up for years, and I still suffer from neck and low back disc bulges and some nerve pain and nerve weakness.  Then I had two more nearly back to back car wrecks; thank goodness they happened after I got my doctorate.  I remember the memory loss after my first major car wreck, but these last two also involved head injuries and I read that emotional problems can follow closed head injuries.  That was a big help to me, seriously.  I started to look at me in a whole new light.

I just want my friends to treat me normal, but the problem is I don’t have many friends.  Not for lack of trying.  Most people are so caught up in their own lives, their own relationships, that being my friend is the least of their worries.  This is how my mind works; no matter what I do to try to gain their trust they just see me as some complicated person that cannot relate to them.  I can’t make them like me; I just try to be myself and maybe that is wrong.  If someone has the answer, please tell me.

I read books on spirituality and philosophy for years.  I was not at all interested in anything fiction during that time.  I saw lots of clients and began to see a correlation between their thoughts and the areas of pain they were experiencing.  I published my findings called “The Psychology of Health; or Think Yourself Well.”  I gave public talks on it and shared my research.  I submitted my thesis and got my Masters in Divinity for my Ordained Minister license.  Being an ordained minister really started when I started talking to Jesus when I was very young.  Yes, I am a psychic.  Most of my friends, family and patients have absolutely no idea who I really am.  I can imagine what people are thinking; not just about me, but about themselves and their own situation.  People who have listened to me are actually amazed when I give them sincere insights into their thoughts; I may have even saved lives!  It even shocked me when the basic facts revealed themselves to me, but not to them.

My guides and teachers are Ascended Masters; Jesus, Kuthumi, and St. Germaine.  They call the work that we do, Atomic Transformation.  I channeled Jesus and he was the best friend.  He would take me to Jerusalem; we would wear those white cotton robes (Moroccan Gandora) and sandals, of course.  We would sit together on a wooden bench in a room with a dirt floor and adobe walls.  He would teach me and he really reached me.  One day he shared with me this truth; The Golden Rule.  You will be amazed to know that the wording is incorrect.  He took my hands and looked me in the eyes and said: “Love you as I have loved you, then love others.”  He did not say only love people who are white, black, or brown; or only love straight people.  He definitely did not say to make fun of people who are not like you.

How do you do that?  How can I love myself the way Jesus loves me?  Wow, that is a tall order, right?  But I really do want to love everyone like Jesus does; unconditionally.  My favorite philosopher is Gurdjieff.  He is the one who coined the phrase, The WORK; not that new age lady, sorry.  According to the WORK being yourself is a moment by moment experience; no matter what ever else happens to you in that moment.  Loving unconditionally is also about loving not only yourself, but others; and acceptance without judgement.  Aye, that can be the rub, eh?  Another lesson in the WORK involves not getting attached to the “story.” Such as the memory of a past event that causes us pain or guilt.  Memories are stories and not really true anymore.  We remember them and no one else does; nor do they care.  But we have to change the memory, the story, if we want to overcome the pain or guilt.  It’s also a technique I learned in counseling.  It really works, too.

My friends also do not know that I started out in counseling.  I loved the idea and even though I began taking courses on counseling I also found massage and went in that direction for most of my adult life.  But I never let go of being a counselor, so after I became an Ordained Minister I kept going and took Chaplain classes with Unity.  I consider myself a metaphysician, because to call myself a Christian is not really accurate.  The red letter portions of the bible are all that I ever related to, especially since I could actually speak to Jesus so I had the inside scoop, so to speak.  He actually likes to be called “J” according to the Course of Miracles, which he orchestrated.  I have never been to a regular meeting, because I can not really get it.  I like simple.

So, today I have different goals.  I think goals are like a book; first you make an outline.  Then you pick a starting point.  What can I do first? If I want something to happen I work backwards to decide what that first step has to be.  Or like making a dish; what is the first step? Do I have all the ingredients? Maybe that is my first step; to go purchase the ingredients that I need.  I can make a wonderful pie or casserole; not so much at writing books by myself.  But an article, definitely; or a speech.

I am going to get blood test results in a few days and I will know what is showing up that could be causing the inflammation; I hired an Internal Medicine doctor, finally.  I will let you know how things are going.  I definitely want to get my energy back so I can exercise again; I have all that weight to lose again.  If it wasn’t for all the knowledge I have about herbs, vitamins and homeopathic remedies, I would probably have been given prescription drugs to take.  But my new doctor is very happy with the regimen that I have made for myself and agrees that I will be okay if I just continue with my arsenal of natural supplements.  He also agrees that in the United States doctors really do not know much about parasites and that sort of infection like they do in the Asian regions of the world where parasites are a lot more prevalent and doctors who live there see this sort of infection on a regular basis.

Meanwhile, I can meditate, keep eating healthy food, fruit, and juice, and chicken soup of course.  I love my ginger tea! So, off to bed with me to get some rest.  Take care and stay tuned.

Update on my Health Status:

Well, the blood tests are normal.  And the doctor I thought was going to be a team player just dismissed me.  I explained that I had shortness of breath when exercising, but he ordered a cardio stress test and ECHO of my heart, and dismissed the breathing problem.  He basically told me not to come see him anymore; he is done with me.

When I get stumped, and listen, I am really stumped, I go back to my own understanding of the body and I ask myself, “What would you give a patient who told you this?”  I said I felt my chest was becoming part of the problem; is this exercise induced asthma or is it pneumonia?  That made the decision for me; I will treat myself for an Upper Respiratory Infection.

When we look at the lungs they are situated in the chest.  We can access them by breathing in diffused essential oils, so I went to my Essential Oil Resource Guide and found several ‘formulas’ that I added to my diffuser.  I did this every night for a week.

I looked up Bach Flower remedies and using a pendulum, I picked out 4 very good flower essences;  add two drops each to a brown glass dropper bottle, fill mostly with pure water, and just a tablespoon of Vodka for purification.  Take this by mouth several times a day.

Herbs for the immune system are also antibiotic in nature, so I found a perfect blend of Echinacea, Goldenseal, Cayenne Pepper and Burdock.  This will cleanse the lungs, act to kill any germs without harming the host (Me!) and assist with healing; Burdock is that pesky wild plant that puts out nasty burrs that we destroy from our gardens.

I also am drinking lemon water with Lime essential oil added to help alkaline my blood, which will help boost my immune system.

And I have recently switched to a ketogenic diet.  That is a discussion for another day, but to summarize I will get my energy from fats, not glucose and adding NAC or N-acetylcysteine will add energy, too.

Lastly, I am going to do an Asthma Regimen that I have used for a lot of patients: Natural D-Hist from Orthomolecular.  This product is wonderful for upper respiratory conditions, but the protocol must be adhered to for nearly 3 months to actually “clean” the lungs.

Another condition that just started happening is neuralgia.  I have a weird thing going on where my right side gets hot and burns; the nerves are somehow being affected by the muscle tension in my low back.  But it is also happening in my right shoulder and arm, and on occasion I will get both arms numb down into the elbow.  Twice I have been asked if I have Lyme’s Disease, and I am very adamant that I do not have any disease. All of this came from the infection from the strange parasitic worm and all the toxins that were bombarding my body for many years.  I am not ruling out Lyme’s Disease, of course, but I have no one to turn to for that kind of testing.

There are clinics I have found who could offer help, but I am being told I have to fork over $2,000 to $3,000 dollars just to see the doctor.  That is for the office visit and lab tests, but not for any treatments.  I am looking for a clinic who will administer blood doping; take my blood and inject pure oxygen, then put it back into my body.  Oxygen will help kill some of the bugs that will not show up on test.  Also, the doctor visits and possibly the tests may be covered by my insurance, but Oxygen or Ozone doping are not.  I am looking for an alternative to this procedure; something I can do at home, but it appears that I have to have a doctor just to prescribe it, and I am unsure if I can get one to cooperate.

What is my next step? I am doing all that I can humanly do to help my condition.  I saw my Naprapath and his manipulation of my tissues helps for about half a day.  Even now as I am sitting at the computer to write, my right side is on fire and I feel tired.

I am not sure if anyone has ever dealt with any of these symptoms, or that you would even take the time to read my blog, but I am very open to suggestions.  The world is vast, but it seems so foreign to someone like me who just wants to feel better and get healthy.

Reflexology; Anti-Aging and Stress Relieving

Reflexology is a time-honored therapy that existed thousands of years ago.  The Egyptian Method that I teach has its’ roots in the Egyptian Pyramids of Giza; the Physician’s Tomb.  Many cultures have held high regard for the healing power of applying gentle pressure to reflex points that ‘reflect’ back to the specific body part or organ.

I have enjoyed teaching the Egyptian Method since 1995 when I was first introduced to this gentle technique.  In my style of teaching I also add techniques to relax the giver such as stretches for the forearms, headache points, and aromatherapy.  Giving a session in reflexology should be just as beneficial to the giver as it is to the receiver.  I also add the concept of acupressure making the Egyptian Reflexology Method more about the perception of the receiver; are they relaxed, or are they feeling pain and signs of stress?

Pain is not the goal of Egyptian Method Reflexology and should never be accepted by the receiver.  Certainly some points are going to feel much more tender to the touch, but I have always taught my students to get off of the painful spot as quickly as possible.  The giver can once again return to the spot to see how it feels after working in a circle around the tender area or “Circling the Dragon.” I learned this term and concept from my acupuncture training.   Using a concept we call ‘point discrimination’ the body can send the information to release tension to the painful spot making our treatments much more comfortable and beneficial.

However, after all these years I discovered that the FACE also holds reflex points.  In actuality there are thousands of reflex points on our body, hence Body Reflexology, but the face is so easy to work on and there are tremendous results.

First, we know that the face has reflex points, lines of energy and also lines of physical stress we call wrinkles.  The neck is also considered part of the face in my treatments, so we start with some gentle neck massage, and work our way up to the face; it also includes the head and the lines of energy that surround the head.

Facial Reflexology could also be called Facial Acupressure.  Applying gentle pressure on acupressure points helps stimulate energy, but it also helps bring fresh blood to the tissues of the face, head and neck; the skin begins to tone and the receiver will actually begin to look younger!

I am very excited about the benefits of Facial Reflexology, and hope you will be too.  I am looking for some volunteers to receive regular weekly treatments that will be documented and photographed to prove that Facial Reflexology actually makes you look younger!  I have seen it work, but I want you to experience it for yourself.

I am taking just six volunteers who will receive Free weekly sessions; either in Naperville, Illinois at my office there, or at Spring Creek Holistic in northwest Illinois where I live and work.  Contact me as soon as you can so we can start the new year out with some exciting results of your regular sessions.

Here is what is required in order to be accepted into the study: Attend three or four sessions a month of Facial Reflexology. Drink lots of water during the entire trial. Agree to be photographed the first day, at 3 months and at 6 months.  The final results will be published in my book, so I will need permission to use your photograph. There will be paperwork and some questionnaires to fill out, but it should be simple enough.

After the study, I will also publish it in a journal to help other health professionals see the benefits of the treatments.  All participants will be able to continue receiving treatments either by myself or one of our trained reflexologists at the regular treatment price.  I encourage everyone (not just the study participants) to receive about two or three treatments every month; some patients really love the weekly sessions and rarely miss their appointment.

Raw Living Food Lifestyle

Plants grow from seed that when nourished contain the necessary minerals, vitamins, trace elements, carbohydrates and enzymes necessary for human health.  The amino acids found in plant matter help our bodies make proteins that we then use to make muscles, bones, organs, and so on.  There are no toxins in the cells of plants, fruits or grains.  The toxins consumed by the Standard American Diet come from the cooked foods, the dead meat, the refined carbohydrates that are difficult for our bodies to digest.

When I eat a raw diet I am full of energy and my cells are constantly renewed with healthy cells.  When I eat cooked food I am tired and irritable; my hair color is white (not the vibrant red that I was born with) and some little whiskers pop out on my chin.  Yikes!

Within just a few months of starting my raw organic diet, my red hair changed in texture and color.  It is now a soft strawberry blonde, and I found a blonde streak in the back.  The hairs on my chin have diminished and there are still a few long hairs but they are light and soft.  These will continue to disappear as my body detoxifies and becomes whole and strong again.

Recovering from illness requires that we maintain an alkaline environment within our body.  Remarkable things begin to happen when we ear a diet that is rich in organic fruits, vegetables, grains and seeds, and reduce the amount of cooked and processed foods.  A detoxification program will help jump start the cleansing process by removing the debris and mucous that lines the colon so that the wonderfully rich food we ingest can be absorbed better.

What of all the drugs and medications that we took over our lifetime?  These too need to be cleansed from the body, especially from the liver where detoxification takes place.  Which is why we do not ever eat the liver of another animal.  I used to eat chicken livers and calf livers and I don’t touch them anymore.  Yuck.  We de-vein the shrimp to remove that dark strip before we cook it.  My understanding is that thin dark strip is their colon and it taste better if it is removed before cooking.  I don’t eat shrimp now, but I am using this to illustrate my point.

Dr. Stanley S Bass wrote an article on What Symptoms to Expect When You Improve Your Diet several decades ago and it is still available on his website http://drbass.com/symptoms.html .  It is not the body that improves, but also our mind.  We recover quicker from disease when we eat a more whole food balanced diet.  I don’t agree with everything he suggests, but I certainly agree that our bodies heal quicker if we are not bombarded with toxins, drugs and pharmaceutical medicines.  I understand that we may need a medication to help us through a crisis from time to time, but we also need to realize that the medication can accumulate in our tissues and needs to be cleansed out of our bodies as soon as possible.  I don’t take pain killers anymore even for surgery because I have found a wholesome organic substitute for pain relievers through therapeutic essential oils.  And the medication does not have time to accumulate in my body because as these oils work to relieve my pain and swelling, they also remove the harmful drugs from my body.

Our body’s job is to repair and make new and healthier cells than the ones before.  Sometimes it requires a little house cleaning which comes in the form of a cold or flu.  I prefer not to feel that way, so I do cleansing on a daily basis and avoid taking in toxic materials and eat mostly organic food that is neither cooked or processed, and I avoid chemicals as much as possible that I can’t pronounce!

If there are toxins in our body, the first level of defense is to remove the toxins.  That means that the repair process has to wait a while.  This may also explain how our bodies break down over time with so many toxins invading our cells.  How can we expect the body to manufacture new cells, if the emphasis is on removing toxins and we constantly consume toxins; never giving our body a break.  Leonard Orr recommends doing an isolation diet once a week.  I practiced this for many years and found it very helpful.  One day a week I would pick fruit; lots of fruit and lots of variety.  One week I would pick a day where I would only eat vegetables; raw, steamed or blanced.  That was an easy way to slowly detox, I thought.

I also feel we should eat only when hungry.  If you are not feeling hungry then you may be just feeding an emotion and not really hungry.  Also, the hunger “pangs” stimulate the anti-aging hormones.  A great way to help the body cleanse itself is to only drink water when we wake up instead of automatically having a breakfast meal.  If we drink water and it quenches our hunger, then we aren’t really hungry.  If, however, you drink water and you are still hungry, then you are really hungry so eat something.  I have done this several times, and still do it often, and usually am not really hungry until one or two in the afternoon.  After I eat a regular meal I feel fine again, and I have never felt weak or irritable as long as I drank water.

There are supplements that we can take to help the body rid itself of accumulated toxins.  I found out a few of them quite by accident by treating the symptoms in an asthmatic patient.  I use a product that is made of Stinging Nettles, Quercitin, Bromelain, and N-acetylcysteine or NAC.  It is an Orthomolecular product so it is only available through a licensed doctor, and not through a health food store.  I keep this supplement on hand in my clinic and it flies off my shelf.  I have used it for upper respiratory conditions, which is why I recommended it for my asthmatic patient.  However, I kept him on the recommended daily dose of two capsules three times a day for several months.  That is what cured his asthma; his entire body was cleansed of the excess debris that was interfering with the lung expansion.  Actually, he only took three bottles before his symptoms were completely gone.

This natural decongestant can work for anyone.  It is safe for children, and adults, and can also be used as a preventative for anyone, including elderly who might be at risk for pneumonia.  I wish I had been a doctor when my grandfather died of pneumonia; he was only 82 years old.  I could do nothing for his emphysema, but I could have helped him stay alive a little longer and cured his pneumonia.

Just a note here on the word “cure.”  If you are a lay person, I don’t recommend you use this word loosely.  I, on the other hand, an a licensed health professional can use this word and my definition of the word cure is different than the allopathic doctor’s definition of cure.  My definition includes the concept that the body is healthy and requries no intervention, even from supplements. It may be necessary to take one or two vitamins or herbs indefinitely due to a genetic deficiency, but I prefer we get our vitamins, minerals and trace elements through our food.  That is why I prefer whole organic foods and stay away from dead food that is processed to make it taste good.  Why eat empty calories?

A healthy body looks healthy.  Do you know the difference?  How do you know you are healthy?  What is your ideal body weight?  What does your skin look like?  and do you enjoy life?  Your skin should have a glow with no dark circles under the eyes, no puffiness and no discolorations elsewhere.  Brown areas indicate lack of circulation to the area, even if you are dark complected.  The elderly patient may have brown skin around the ankles with blisters indicating extreme inflammation.  I usually look at arterial obstruction but sometimes it is due to food allergies.  Dark skin around the genitals in the upper thigh and inner groin could mean a hip dysplasia especially in an obese patient.

A healthy body is not fat.  I don’t care who you have talked to, it is NOT healthy to be fat and obesely overweight.  Body Mass Index is a good way to gauge what a healthy range is for your body at your age of life.  It is an easy formula to calculate, so look it up.  If it says you are obese, then you are obese. Deal with the reality, and take the necessary steps to lose the excess weight.  I recommend a Raw Living Food Lifestyle like the one taught at the Ann Wigmore Institute.

Ann Wigmore’s Principles of the Raw Living Lifestyle
1. Oxygen – fresh air every day, and water enough to equal half your body weight.
2. Sunlight – 15 minutes every day
3. Fermented food – to provide probiotics necessary for healthy gut flora and to promote natural immunity
4. Wheat Grass – to bind heavy metals, detox the liver, and provide chlorophyl necessary for tissue health and regneration
5. Exercise – lymphatic drainage through gentle vibratory exercise on the Rebounder that she calls Lymphasize. Daily exercise 30 minutes per day when possible.
6. Sprouts – and shoots to provide essential enzymes necessary to repair cell walls
7. Antioxidants – raw organic foods rich in the powerful antioxidants that help our bodies repair and reduce the chances of cancer every developing.
8. Alkaline food and drinks – begin each day with an alkaline drink such as salt water, lemon water and rejuvelac
9. Rest – allows the body to repair itself and gives our mind a break from our busy lives

OXYGEN

Water contains hydrogen and oxygen. Oxygen is what keeps us alive and well. We breathe it in through our lungs, and most people breathe rather shallow. As you rest, whether through meditation or regular sleep, you breathe deeper. And air is free, although it is not as inanimate as we might think; it is as sentient as you or I and it breathes us, keeping us alive. Never take for granted the amount of air your body needs.

Take deep breaths every day. Relaxing while taking long deep breaths relaxes muscles, massages organs, and helps the body eliminate waste. The exchange of oxygen with toxic gases is very important for health and maintains an alkaline environment.

Hydrogen from the water we drink, and from the breakdown of the food we eat, helps us make energy and other molecules essential for life. Whether you drink pure water, or get water from some food, I really think tea or coffee are not recognized as liquid in your body because they contain other nutrients. Especially if you add lemon or sugar to your tea, or cream and sugar to your coffee… the body will recognize these all together and it does not translate into just plain water. I recommend half your bodyweight in water, or more imply put, drink 4 bottles a day.

Vitamin D

We get most of our Vitamin D from sunlight, which is why Ann Wigmore recommends we get sunshine every day. Taking walks outside is a good example, and it adds to the requirement of exercise as well. However, when you are in a climate that is cloudy most of the year, then adding about 5,000 mg of Vit D on cloudy days is essential. Vitamin D helps keep our bones strong, and it may even keep the lining around our nerves whole and healthy and prevent, and even cure diseases like multiple sclerosis. In any case, it helps the mood so it wards off seasonal effective disorder. And for that matter, so will eating greens.

FERMENTED FOODS – NATURE’S PROBIOTIC

I recently discovered a great website that explains so much about fermented foods, drinks and contains lots of recipes.

As a Certified Raw Food Chef, I include fermented foods in my classes. It is essential for getting the probiotics into our colon that help keep our bowels clean, and improves health overall. When making fermented food or beverages, there are boutique blends of probiotics one could add to the batch, or you can just let good old Mother Nature make them for you. Fermented foods can contain trillions of healthy gut bacteria, much more than you can get in pills and much cheaper. A good batch of my red cabbage slow takes about 5 heads of red cabbage at a cost of just $15.00. Well worth the time and effort if it saves you money and gives a more biologically available form of probiotics for health, wouldn’t you agree?

WHEAT GRASS

Good fresh wheat grass shots contain so much chlorophyll and other life-giving ingredients that it is important to include a few shots a day into your Raw Diet. Other countries are not so lucky as we are here in the US. In Europe for instance they offer only one tablespoon a day, where at the Ann Wigmore Institute you might get three shots a day, plus a few ounces to add to your implant after your enema, and more ounces to add to your bath. I personally love the sweet taste of fresh wheat grass, rather than powdered or frozen varieties. Growing it is cheap and easy, if you have the space and patience. Spring Creek Holistic serves wheat grass to all our enrollees during the detoxification weekend. I especially like the energy boost it gives, and I like to chase it with fresh squeezed orange juice. Very delicious and nutritious, too.

Every detox starts with cleansing the colon. Why you ask? So that when the toxins start pouring out of the liver they have a path to exit the body. Otherwise the toxins back up into the other organs and a headache results. We once had a patient attend our detox program and she did not understand the instructions prior to attending. Stop drinking coffee over a few days before the weekend, because we don’t serve coffee during a detoxification program. Well, she had such a headache it made her eyes squint. So we gave her a cup of coffee that set her right and she was able to continue the program without a hitch. Please read the instructions and follow them completely prior to attending our detox weekend. Good advice.

EXERCISE

When I mention exercise what pops into your mind? A gym membership, driving to the gym, buying clothes to cover up, all those people watching me, what if I can’t lift the weights, what if I can’t do the yoga pose, and on and on it goes. The exercise I am referring to is gentle movement, probably on a mini-trampoline, or a 30 minute walk outside (weather permitting), or bouncing on an exercise ball. Sounds more gentle, doesn’t it? The idea for exercise is to get the blood pumping in a gentle steady rhythm for long enough that the lymphatic vessels can cleanse the body of toxins and the blood can circulate them for elimination. One of my friends loved her rocking chair, so she created “Rocking Chair Aerobics.” Keep your feet on the ground and begin rocking back and forth. She was having knee problems and it helped her knees so much that she quit using her wheel chair and graduated to a walker. After a time, she began to “stand up” for a second with each “rock” and it really improved her standing and walking. And any activity that is consistent, even rocking, is considered aerobic, so it improves heart function.

So when you think of exercise, think “gentle.” If you want to walk on a treadmill, then do it gently and just set a pace that you can handle and still keep talking. Walk out in the sunlight and you have accomplished two of the principles of the Living Food Lifestyle.

SPROUTS

Enzymes are the building block for proteins, and sprouts contain the highest concentration of the enzymes we need. Most sprouts are seedlings that we make from tiny seeds like alfalfa, clover, broccoli, radish, and cabbage. We soak them, and drain them, and let them breathe in a jar much like a tiny terrarium. When the first green leaves are visible, they are ready to eat. Other seeds can be sprouted for adding to dishes or for snacks; seeds of mung, sunflower, and almond are good examples.

Shoots on the other hand are seeds that have been grown in a medium and we are eating just the tiny plant. We still want a set of green leaves, but we don’t allow them to grow much more because we want them when they are young and tender. Sunflower seeds also make good shoots, but we really appreciate the taste of pea shoots, buckwheat, and soy. (I never eat any soy products, except for soy sprouts or shoots.) Watercress is another easy to find shoot, but growing them is as easy as growing wheat grass, and I use the same medium.

When adding shoots or sprouts to your green smoothie you only need 1/8 to 1/4 cup. A little goes a long way. I add them to salads, sandwiches, and as garnish to various raw dishes like Raw Lasagna.

ANTI-OXIDANTS

When oxygen is missing an electron it is called a Free Radical and can do damage to your DNA. These molecules are not bound so they are unstable, and they zing through your body and into your cell actually cutting through the DNA in the nucleus. Cancers develop when DNA is cut by free radicals and join in an unnatural way. Anti-oxidants neutralize free radicals making them harmless to your body.

When you want a good anti-oxidant think COLOR. Red, Blue, Orange, Yellow, but mostly red foods contain lots of anti-oxidant capabilities. As with enzymes a little goes a long way, so a small portion of red pepper, for instance, can add a large amount of anti-oxidants to your smoothie or salad. The blue or purple color of blueberries signifies their intense content of anti-oxidants and B Vitamins, like B-12 or cyanacobalamin.

B Vitamins are necessary to help with nerve function, mood regulation and brain function as in cognitive function, and even dementia. I once heard of a man who was suffering from what his doctors termed dementia, yet when he started taking a supplement of B12 his functions returned. But of course his son had already moved him into the home with his wife and children and there was no getting him back to his own home, because they sold it. Oops!

ALKALINE DRINKS

By breaking your fast you can start your day with an alkaline drink. Salt water is a very quick and inexpensive drink that is easy to make. Rejuvelac is a fermented drink made from sprouted grains like quinoa and makes an excellent drink for any time of the day, but especially full of probiotics to start your day with. Lemon juice is also very alkaline, or you might like to use lemon essential oil that does not contain the acid to erode the teeth. Each of these drinks will alkalinize the body. Cancer cannot live in an alkaline environment. Our organs and our healthy probiotics thrive in an alkaline environment. Our classes show you how to make Sal Sole, or salt solution, Rejuvelac and how to prepare sprouts to make the fermented drink.

REST and RELAXATION

I have been a meditator since an early age. I did my own walking meditation when I was around 10 years old, and studied Silva Method in 1979. My favorite form of meditation is Primordial Sound Meditation, where a mantra is repeated during the relaxation. I learned PSM at the Chopra Center in Carlsbad California; a requirement for all students of the Vedic traditions taught there. Whatever sort of method you use to relax, do it every day if possible; consistency will give you the rewards you desire. Don’t worry about what type of relaxation technique you use; there is no wrong type. Rest about 20-30 minutes. If at first you need to read a book, that is just fine. Perhaps you fall asleep. That is perfect; it means you were tired so honor yourself with a little nap.

I say a mantra while I meditate. If my thoughts wonder, I know I can release them by going back to my mantra. Your mantra can be a word, a phrase, or statement; anything that is easy to remember and gets your brain to focus on the present moment. You might find that saying it aloud at first helps you to focus better. After a few minutes you can begin repeating it silently in your mind. See what happens. Dr. Father Thomas Keeting taught me Contemplative Prayer when I was studying for my ordaination. He calls the statement or mantra, a Sacred Word. So when I first started my mantra was the word “clear.” I imagined a blackboard and I erased all the words so that the blackboard was clean, or the words were cleared off. I would also imagine me using the eraser and my arm moving back and forth erasing the words, much like a Qi Gong movement. And that worked for me.

Rest is when your body is doing repairs, building cells, laying down new linings of your intestinal tract, and you are breathing. All this important work is difficult to accomplish when you are busy with your day to day life, such as work, sitting in front of a computer, preparing dinner, and so on. Rest is very important to your healing process and should not be taken lightly. Give yourself permission to do nothing for a few minutes every day.

RAW FOOD KITCHEN

Now that you understand the principles of the Raw Living Food Lifestyle, you can begin adding a few raw foods to your diet every day. I call this the transition stage of changing your lifestyle. Look through your cupboard and your pantry and decide what things you can eliminate that contain unhealthy ingredients. You can donate some of the food to your local pantry or non-profit organization. After removing unhealthy food stuffs, you will gradually increase the raw ingedients you will need to prepare raw dishes based upon the recipes you decide to try. There are lots of free recipes on the websites such as sadtoraw.com, rawfamily.com, greensmoothiegirl.com and so on. Raw Food Lifestyle is becoming more popular so check out some of the “cookbooks” that contain a variety of recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. Whatever you do, you will need to add a few additional appliances to help in food preparation

It may take you a few months of shopping as you begin to switch from a Standard American Diet (SAD) to a Living Food Diet or Alkaline Diet and the Raw Living Food Lifestyle. The more raw foods you can incorporate (and I am NOT talking about raw meat) the better your health will become.

Practice the 9 Principles and come to a weekend training at the Spring Creek Holistic Center where all the meals are prepared for you and you learn how to prepare some meals for yourself. Your body will appreciate the break from cooked food and the stress of everyday life, so you can better concentrate on what makes you happy.

Our guests arrive at 5 pm on Thursday for orientation. Each guest is assigned a dorm room, or you can camp at the nearby State Park, Lake-Le-Aqua-Na or on our land. We meet at 6 pm in the classroom to discuss the agenda for the weekend and answer questions. We take guests on a first come basis and just a few at a time. If you have a diagnosis such as cancer, or diabetes, we need a referral from your primary care physician before you arrive. We work closely with your medical treatment plan and it helps us to know a little about your medical history. Each guest will fill out a health questionnaire and we will do our best to make you comfortable and welcome while you are here.

Our guests stay until Monday afternoon. You are welcome to stay more than once, but the program is only conducted from Friday to Monday once a month. Come visit any time you like; the dorms are available for weekend or weekday guests. There are wonderful things to do around the area at different times of the year and we always have gardens that need volunteer hands to keep going, plus the yoga classes that all our guests enjoy.

Lemonade Diet

The Master Cleanser Diet was first made popular by Dr. Stanley Burroughs in the book “Healing for the Age of Enlightenment” published in 1973.  I became aware of it in 1979 when I met an alternative medicine doctor who practiced the three modalities listed in his book: VitaFlex Therapy, Color Therapy and the Master Cleanser Diet.  Over the years the Master Cleanser Diet has become a unique detoxification program that has been used by thousands of people.

The Lemonade Diet is just another name for the Master Cleanser Diet because the diet consists of drinking lemonade every day.  The uniqueness of this drink is the maple syrup used to sweeten it, along with the scant amount of Cayenne Pepper.  I usually recommend putting just the dash of cayenne on top of each glass, rather than adding it to the lemonade that is refrigerated.  This prevents it from being too hot.  If you decide to add the cayenne to the lemonade it will get infused with the juice and become a Hot Lemonade, so be careful!  Being from Texas, I happen to like it a little hot. Cayenne will also help increase the body metabolism, which helps break down fat.

I am not giving away any secrets by sharing the recipe for the Lemonade, because it is easily available on line if you search Master Cleanser.  But I would like to explain why we use maple syrup instead of other sugars for the sweetener.  And I would also suggest you consider adding a drop of Lemon Essential Oil to each glass, and any other essential oils that you like for flavor as they have extremely beneficial actions for your health.

Maple Syrup

Maple syrup is concentrated from the sap of the sugar maple tree and other maple trees.  It is a natural sugar that comes from the xylem sap of the tree.  When the sap runs out it is mostly water and needs to be boiled to evaporate the water leaving the thick syrup.  There is a higher concentration of manganese and zinc in the syrup than in other sugars.  And the concentration of fructose to glucose is about 50/50.  This means that 50% of the sugar will be processed in the liver and the other 50% will help give the brain energy and offer fuel to the rest of the body.  The processing of sugar through the liver is important; it helps with detoxification.  The only other sugar I am aware of that helps with this is Yacon syrup, which has begun to increase in popularity for its ability to aid in weight loss.

The truth is that Maple Syrup or glucose is recognized as FOOD in our bodies.  This explains why we don’t get hungry on the Lemonade.  Just be sure to use organic lemons, and a good quality of Maple Syrup and pure water.

Weight Loss

Speaking of losing weight, some people will lose weight with the Lemonade Diet, but this is not always the case.  I never recommend this form of detoxification if you are already on the slender side or skinny and never to men over the age of 45 or 50 because they will lose muscle mass which can be detrimental to their health.  But if you have excess fat mass you want to shed or excess fluid then this is a good diet for you.  Another thought is to add more maple syrup so that you do not experience weight loss if that is not your goal, but I don’t think that is advisable.  Instead, add a few snacks each day that will not be difficult to digest and keep you satisfied. Good snacks are celery with almond butter, apple with lemon juice, pineapple chunks with chocolate sauce (see recipe below), soaked almonds with nutritional yeast, sweet potato chips; just keep the serving sizes to a minimum.

Snacking

The Lemonade Diet consists of drinking the lemonade all day long, and absolutely no food.  I recommend that you do this for at least four days, so a long weekend works great.  The first time I did it was Thanksgiving many years ago.  I made a complete Thanksgiving dinner with turkey and dressing.  My dinner was on the smallest plate I could find; a saucer.  I had a tablespoon of each dish and that was all.  I completed the four days and felt great!  But what about snacks?  Well, I think they will be okay.  Our mouths are not used to not chewing and they feel sad when we have nothing for them to do!  So, grab a stick of celery or put a teaspoon of tuna on a cracker.  If you are going to do the complete diet it takes about 10 days, so about one week into it, eat a salad.  Just don’t do large amounts or huge meals.

Breaking the Diet

Do not under any circumstances eat food for at least a day following the end of your Lemonade Diet.  Instead, drink broth and other juices, even green smoothies, but wait a day or two before asking your body to digest food again.  Enjoy a bowl of Chicken Soup where the vegetables are cooked and no noodles please unless they are gluten free.  I make a delicious bone broth that is nutritious and helps settle your appetite, plus it is easy to digest and contains glucosamine.

VitaFlex

When Stanley Burroughs first shared the protocol for health in his book, it included receiving VitaFlex Therapy and color therapy, too.  VitaFlex has been seeing a revival, working with the therapeutic essential oils, in a technique known as Raindrop Technique.  The oils are applied in a layering fashion along the spine and worked into the tissue using the VitaFlex movements.  However, VitaFlex was designed to be used over the entire body.  The vibration caused by the movement of the fingers wiggling across the skin stimulates the blood vessels to open, the lymph vessels begin absorbing more toxins and the nerves begin to relax causing muscle relaxation and detoxification.  You can either attend a Raindrop Technique training or order the video to learn more about how to perform VitaFlex Technique.

Color Therapy

The third component to the protocol described in Healing For the Age of Enlightenment by Stanley Burroughs is Color Therapy.  I am sure there are very sophisticated color lamps available these days, but back then we used color gels and lights similar to those used in theater.  There are color bulbs that will work just as well, and even flashlights that have tiny color gels to change colors in the screw top.  Color is electromagnetic energy and has healing properties.  Sunlight enters our bodies through the skin and separates forming molecules under the skin, like Vitamin D.  However, by using individual colors we can specify what type of healing we require.  The colors of the rainbow are what we are looking for here.  The body has energy centers called chakras that are recognized by their color or energetic frequency beginning with Red at the base of the spine and rising up in energy along the spine until we reach White again at the top of the head.

One color in particular that I have worked with for pain is Yellow.  When you use a yellow bulb and shine the light over a bone fracture or painful area, the yellow color will aid in healing the bone and reducing pain.  Think of the color of foods.  Yellow foods contain Vitamin A, such as cantelope, squash or apricots. Recently I have been adding wolfberry juice, although red in color, found in NingXia Red juice to my daily regimen because it contains five different beta-carotenes and aids in tissue healing. It has a wonderful taste and when added to grape juice it will increase the immune cells known as natural killer-T cells.

Two things that all cancer patients and AIDS patients should be adding to their health regimen: Color Therapy and NingXia Red juice.  In fact, there was a clinic in Austin, Texas that offered Color Therapy to all patients in a very relaxing atmosphere.  I do not know if it is still offered there at this time, but if you have the space it would be a wonderful offering.

Color fabric can do some of the work.  I usually recommend that patients wear the fabric color for the chakra that is out of balance, which I find from my energy therapy sessions.  I also suggest they eat the foods of that color, or just imagine that color at the chakra level during meditation.  There is so much work to be done with color therapy that has been ignored for so long in healing modalities.

Colon Flush

The first thing you should do each day while on the Lemonade Diet, is a colon flush.  This is accomplished by drinking a large amount of Saline, water where salt has been added.  Add 2 teaspoons of salt to a quart of warm water and stir until dissolved.  I prefer using Himalayan Salt due to the antimicrobial properties that naturally occur in this form of salt.  Drink the salt water first thing in the morning.  If the water is warm it tastes pretty good; almost like a broth.  For this reason I usually call it Salt Broth.  Stanley Burroughs called it Salt Bathing.

How it works:  Our bodies are made up of saline, but require water for hydration.  When we drink saline, which is a heavier gravity weight than our blood, the saline absorbs excess water from our tissues.  This is the bodies natural tendency to want to remain or maintain stasis.  The saline plus the extra fluids will be flushed through the colon.  Please note: it is NOT absorbed by the body, so there is no worry about the extra salt causing a rise in heart rate.  This is an important thing to note.  However, it WILL cause a rather explosive expulsion of fecal matter and you will need to be near the bathroom.  If you are too uncomfortable with this explosive evacuation, then break it down into one glass at a time.  The bowel will move more gently and with more control on your part.

Laxative Tea should be taken the night before you begin the Lemonade Diet, and every night while on the cleanse.  A word of caution about laxative teas: If you brew a cup according to the package, please realize that this is going to be pretty strong.  So only drink half of the cup, and save the other half for the next evening.  Senna is very mild, but I still do not recommend you drink too much.  You can also take stool softeners such as Comfortone, by Young Living, or flax powder or psyllium powder.  Take the stool softeners if you are experiencing too much constipation while on the cleanse.  However, if you avoid heavy foods for a few days prior to beginning the cleanse you will avoid this side effect.  Heavy foods are things like cooked meats, dairy of any kind, and gluten foods.

Weekly Cleanse

If you find your lifestyle just does not afford an entire 4 day period to devote to this detoxification program, then do just one day a week.  In fact, you can detox your body by cleansing one day a week forever; just do one food for the entire day one day a week.  If you choose lemonade then do the entire protocol, but just for one day.  Eat light food the day before, and drink a laxative tea the night before.  Drink a glass of saline in the morning and enjoy an entire day of one food; fruit or vegetable, and no meat or gluten or dairy.

Another way to increase your body’s ability to heal is to break your fast with water.  Do not eat any late night snack (or ice cream!) and begin the day with water.  Drink only water when you feel hunger coming on.  If the water satisfies you, then you really are not hungry.  If you drink a glass of water, and the hunger sensation stays, then you really are hungry and can eat your first meal of the day.  It could happen later in the morning, at lunch, or even later in the afternoon.  Hunger pains, as we usually call them, will trigger the anti-aging hormones and help us stay young.

This became quite evident in some research done by D. Gary Young when he was researching the different ways people aged.  He found that the native peoples of the third world countries would run out of their food stores in early Spring.  They would save the food they had for the children, and the adults would essentially go into a forced fast for nearly a month, until they were able to harvest their crops.  These adults would live to be 125 years old in many villages.  But as the Western world came into their midst and food was being brought in, this forced fast has diminished.  Now these people only live to around 90 years of age.  This is evidence that detoxification is essential in living longer.

Adding Back Food: Breaking the Fast

After any cleanse you should be careful adding food back into your diet.  Start with broth, soups and soft cooked steamed vegetables, or fruit juice; even green smoothies will help.  But here is a terrific time to add different foods to your diet.  The first food you add back into your regular meal, especially a food you did not like!  I did this with green peppers.  I did not like them because they seemed bitter and sharp in taste.  So after one of my early Master Cleanse weeks, I added them to a veggie tray.  Guess what?  They tasted sweet and delicious to me!  So they are now in my life, and I am grateful.  I am not sure if this is mentioned in the book, but it is something I have discovered for myself and recommend to patients, especially if the food is beneficial and would be a good addition of vitamins and nourishment.

Begin with broth, soups that do not contain noodles, and steamed vegetables. Or drink other fruit juices and strained fruit.  After a day or two, have a salad with your steamed or baked vegetables or green smoothie.  Avoid breads or gluten for a few days more.  Eventually, you will be able to eat your normal diet, but it should be much better in content.  The Master Cleanse or Lemonade Diet is a cleanse.  This means you will be healthier after you have cleansed.  Don’t muck up the works by going back to your old ways, the Standard American Diet is SAD.  This is a great time to switch to the Mediterranean Diet, that consists of a much more varied diet and less meat.  I would avoid red meat altogether or just eat it rarely if possible.

RAW FOOD

After you have cleansed is a great time to switch to a different lifestyle; one that concentrates on keeping your body alive with foods that maintain an alkaline environment.  Cancer cannot survive in an alkaline environment, and our bodies are designed to live indefinitely…. if we are clean.  I suggest you do a cleanse as often as you feel comfortable; whether that be daily, weekly, or quarterly.  I do recommend as I said earlier that you try the Lemonade Diet for 4 days to begin.  Then keep it going one day at a time, until you reach 10 days. One question that I have heard from patients is how long can you safely do the Lemonade Diet?  I have done it for 30 days, and I know others who have repeated the 10 day cleanse once a month for several months.  Jesus fasted for 40 days, so it is possible to do it for longer.  When I was on the Lemonade for that long, however, I ate Salads on the weekend and had tiny snacks every day.

Bone Broth

Obtain bones from your butcher or farmer from animals you know are raised by grazing on grass and not pumped full of chemicals.  I get buffalo bones from Lester’s Bison Farm in Wisconsin.  Two large joints are enough for a batch of broth.  Place the bones in a pot of water and boil for 24 hours.  Keep the water boiling in a slow rolling boil.  It takes this long to soften the bones and release their beneficial glucosamine and calcium stores.  Allow the broth to cool and store it in freezer containers.  This is an organic broth and must be kept frozen to store it properly.  Just thaw out a quart at a time for your daily use.  I usually warm it up a little for a yummy snack.  My puppy loves it too.  I sometimes freeze it in ice cube trays, and thaw out a cube in her bowl for her to drink.  I am hoping to ward off any joint problems as she loves to jump and this could lead to bone and joint problems.  I drink it for myself for my own arthritic joints that are healing nicely!

When you remove the bones from the broth, freeze them again, and reserve them for another batch.  You may be able to boil the same bones twice or even a third time and get more of their nutrients out.  I often slice them up and give them to my dog, but just be careful.  That may be a little bit too much for them at one time and come out undigested in their stool; but the marrow is very beneficial for their health and I think it helps keep their teeth clean.

Other recipes include egg shells, crustaceans or chicken bones.  Just be sure these are from good sources, which is why I don’t add them.  But I love to add garlic, celery, onion, and spices to flavor my broth.  You don’t need to drink it every day; just a couple times a week, or daily if you have a problem that needs to heal, like arthritis or a broken bone that needs help healing.
